Strong winds sent a restaurant employee flying toward the roof in Clemson, South Carolina, as he was setting up a tent on Monday. It took a second to register, but then I'm, like, 20 feet in the air and all I could think about was, 'I've got to land on this roof,' Samuel Foster said. He didn’t make it all the way to the roof, and hit the gutter before falling to the ground. Foster had to get stitches above his left eye and suffered several cuts and bruises. Another employee can be seen in the video getting swept several feet in the air and thrown into a table. The restaurant told CNN affiliate WYFF that she was recovering from her injuries.

US stocks plummeted on Friday after President Trump tweeted a response to China’s decision to impose tariffs on $75 billion worth of US goods — the latest retaliation in the trade war. “We don't need China and, frankly, would be far better off without them,” Trump tweeted, rattling investors and sending stocks down sharply. He also “ordered” American companies “to immediately start looking for an alternative to China,” though it wasn’t clear how the President would compel any such moves by privately held businesses. The three major stock indexes — the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq — all ended the week in negative territory, marking their fourth down-week in a row.

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters formed a chain of freedom across Hong Kong on Friday, in a peaceful demonstration that marked a turn from recent violent confrontations with police. The human chain was planned to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way, a historically significant demonstration in which an estimated 2 million people formed a chain across three countries to protest Soviet occupation. Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous city, has seen more than two months of near nonstop protests calling for democratic reforms in defiance of local and mainland Chinese officials. The ocean floor is steadily swallowing up the Titanic as the ship becomes ravaged by metal-eating bacteria. For the first time in 14 years, a team of divers visited the wreck, some 4,000 meters below the surface of the water in the north Atlantic Ocean, to document the decomposition of the luxury ship that was once billed as “unsinkable.” The dive team laid a wreath and held a ceremony to honor the 1,517 people who died in ship's sinking in 1912.

The New Zealand Parliament invited a special guest onto the chamber floor on Wednesday — a newborn baby. While presiding over a debate, parliamentary speaker Trevor Mallard held and fed the one-month-old son of lawmaker Tāmati Coffey, who just returned from paternity leave and was sitting close by. Normally the speaker's chair is only used by presiding officers but today a VIP took the chair with me, Mallard tweeted, along with a photo of him bottle-feeding the baby. People on social media were quick to praise Mallard and Coffey. Thank you for normalizing the family unit, one person tweeted in response to Mallard's photo. We need to see more of this. Work places need to adapt to enable this behavior.

The European Union's satellite program, Copernicus, released this map showing the forecast smoke from the fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest spreading all along Brazil to the east Atlantic coast. The smoke is covering nearly half of the country and is even spilling over into neighboring Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. The scale on the bottom of the map represents the forecast thickness of the smoke in the air.

Fires in the Amazon are burning at the highest rate since the country's space research center began tracking them in 2013, the National Institute for Space Research said this week.

Nebraska teen Julia Yllescas had photographer Susanne Beckmann edit an angelic visage of her father into her senior photos so that he could be with her during this monumental moment. Army Ranger Capt. Robert Yllescas never came home after he deployed to Afghanistan when Julia was just 7 years old. “I can’t even put into words how it makes me feel, knowing he’s still with me,” Julia said. Her father was injured by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2008. He figures prominently in CNN anchor Jake Tapper’s book “The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor,” released in 2012. Milo Gibson, the son of Mel Gibson, will play Yllescas in an upcoming film based on the book to be released later this year. (: Susanne Beckmann)
