Tahoe has some of the clearest, purest water in the world. It's surrounded by fragrant pine trees and singing birds. It's obvious as you drive along it - which is about 22-miles long - that there's a special energy to the area. Paddling on the water for the first time felt meditative. While I can see this as the perfect friend getaway, I love it all to myself too. I can tell I'll keep coming back again and again to this magical place. Have you been to Lake Tahoe? It's incredible. I tried to capture the essence of it in this video - hope you enjoy! This adventure was made possible by @alamorentacar. You can repeat these adventures beginning at Reno-Tahoe International Airport to pick up your rental car. #ad #alamodrivehappy

This morning was one I will cherish for the rest of my life. After staring at this tiny island for nearly 6 years on google earth maps it felt like an out of body experience to finally step foot on its distant shores. A sunken Volcanic caldera where fresh water meets salt water & hot springs bubble out of of the ground. A vibrant breeding ground for arctic Fox & more bird species that I can count. For a brief moment we felt a bit like the Lost Boys in Neverland. Every one of these islands needs a border guard permission to visit, It wasn’t until the last minute that we got approval. Thanks .

@eljackson Unreal!!!

Our boat, The Afina, dwarfed by the scale of active volcanoes & thousands of displaced sea birds carries as many crew as passengers. 24 in total. Sailors, engineers, cook, captain, 1st mate etc etc. all with Russian names we are struggling to pronounce, so often exchange smiles or share coffee we brought to show appreciation. Boats traveling in these rough waters are mandated to carry enough crew in case anything goes wrong. We have been lucky with good weather but their stories & videos of evading storms, waking up to boats covered in ash & weeks of bad weather are horrific. .

With the news that’s dominating headlines in the USA, it’s easy to get down. But every time I’m tempted, I am going to choose to remember all the people I personally know who are amazing, who choose love over hate. And there’s a lot of them. Who do you know like that?
.
In all the awesomesauce that was my hosted trip to Cape Cod, it would be pretty difficult to pick just one favorite thing or moment that stood out more than everything else. Unless I get to just pick the people I experienced the trip with. Cliché answer but in this case so true. @mamacaxx is the only one I got what I think is a half good photo of with my own camera. This was taken very much on the go before leaving for my flight, after packing my room and before one last jaunt into Provincetown for Portuguese treats with @wishwishwish. I theorize that the only reason it’s any good at all is because Cāx set up this whole vignette in the dining room of our digs at @salthouseinn (which is fab btw). A fiercely talented model, a creative director by my definition and a beautiful person inside and out; she’s a good representation of everyone we were on the trip with.
.
Truly @kintravel and @action4ifaw put together the best of the best team and I still can’t believe I was a part of it. Rounding out the crew is: @staceyhedman, @_sunshineinjuly_, @dillon_mangs, @brandenharvey, @everydaypursuits, @swopes,  @trashhand, @jaloulangeree, @valoriedarling and @paultheprotraveler.
.
I can’t promise you’ll have as good a crew as I did to travel with if you book this trip for August or September - but I hope you know this particular blessing of good company at some point in your travels. It’s true that the people make the place. Whether you find people where you go, or you bring your crew with you. #kintravel

Moonrise Sunset. For a brief moment everything felt really calm despite being in one of the harshest places in the world. For the last few weeks I have been beta testing the new A7RIV - the new 60 megapixel full frame powerhouse from @sonyalpha . The camera just got released yesterday so I can finally answer all those who have been asking what I have been shooting with on my last few expeditions. In low light & high contrast scenarios, especially like this with dark shadows & bright highlights I heavily rely on the 15 stops of dynamic range to bring back the details. Rain, sleet, salty wind & darn near terrible conditions have been zero issue for the weather-sealing. Shooting something that straddles the line between medium format in a small lightweight expedition worthy package has been insane. Especially when producing work you want to print as large as humanly possible.

The origin story of #fromKurilswithLove & our rag tag crew of vagabonds began when @renan_ozturk was documenting a North Pole expedition with @povel @tomorrow_unlocked. The two schemed up an adventure of a life time to the Kurils. Actually, rewind. Years prior, the @chrisburkard in his relentless search for beauty was scouring the interwebs for photos of this place. Many of those photos were taken by @e_kaspersky himself, the cyber security expert who has an exuberant love for the Kurils and spearheaded the trip. Together they began to assemble a crew. That’s where I came in. I wondered if there might be an opportunity to add to the mission of creating epic imagery. Perhaps we could connect real & rigorous scientific perspectives & thus contribute to the efforts of establishing the Kurils as a Marine Protected Area through our stories. I wanted to bring in a “jack of all trades” oceanographer (@rishisugla) who could speak to the health of the marine ecosystem, dive with cameras, and had a desire to communicate the complexities of why, in an era of climate change, traveling this far to tell stories was important & how we could make it worthwhile. For terrestrial communication, no one better than @jtkerby. Jeff and I have been friends since we were in the same arctic climate change ecology lab at PennState. He’s an expert at using drone technology for mapping landscapes and changes in plant biomass - super important data for tracking climate impacts. He’s also a @natgeo photographer and science communicator extraordinare. Aerial magician @_ryanhill_ came aboard as 1st mate to Chris. Free-style rapper and photographer @tedhessler joined as AC to Renan. The unexpected stowaway @bigdaddivladi (Vladimir Burkanov) was a gift from the heavens, a marine mammal scientist who has studied sea lions here for over 30 years. I’m here to herd cats (boys with drones), follow the thru lines of this soon-to-be-film and help direct our cameras & microphones towards the moments of introspection & outrospectrion on the Kurils. On what they are teaching us about mama Earth as a whole & our place in it. Stay tuned : )

The last full day of my hosted visit to Cape Cod with @kintravel and @action4ifaw culminated in a whale watching trip. We made our way past the jetty to open ocean under a cobalt sky in perfect temperatures, leaving the clapboard houses of Provincetown behind. I couldn’t have imagined how awe-inspiring our time on the boat would be. Along the way we heard from Patrick who is IFaW’s Director of Marine Conservation, about the whales that have been feeding in the area for decades. He talked about what we can do as everyday citizens to ensure we are being the best possible stewards of the ocean. Biologists from @dolphinfleetwhalewatch, who were with us on board, have named all of the whales we saw and they shared those names with us. During each trip with all guests, they take notes and report back for research and learning purposes. Ever present was the idea that these waters belong to the whales and we were just guests in said water. Our captain often slowed, turned or maneuvered the boat so that the engines would be quiet and the whales would have less or no sound disturbance. He also explained, and obeyed, the rules about safe distances that boats are supposed to maintain so there are never too many at any one time near any group of marine mammals. It was truly a transformative day unlike any other I’ve had out at sea. If you can’t book this trip that KIN and IFaW are offering for Aug and Sep, you can do these things that Patrick recommended:
• reduce or eliminate your seafood and fish consumption
• eat only sustainable seafood
• reduce single-use plastic at home and when you travel
• try to eliminate anything that sheds micro plastics when you do laundry or when you’re in the shower or bath
• reduce your water usage overall
• use your vote to hold politicians accountable, push them to prioritize ocean life
• above all, don’t lose hope. We can make a difference!  #kintravel #pushforprogress #peopleandplanet  by @valoriedarling & myself

For some places you can ‘love it to death’ by overexposing it via social media. In the case of this #FromKurilsWithLove film, I thought that may be the case as well and a question we have asked many times to the local director of @WWF in this region and Vladimir Burkanov, the leading scientist who id with us. The response is the same every time. This region needs tourism instead of extractive industries and particularly it needs more funding for ongoing research and protection. The images we are creating are specifically working toward that. This island, Ushishir, as well as many others deserves to be a full on @UNESCO world heritage site.

I wrote down somewhere that one of my dreams in life has been to photograph an active volcano... I guess I have just seen so many beautiful images of them I figured it would be this transformative experience, but in reality it was actually really eye opening. .
Yesterday we arrived at the newly erupted Raikoke island that had literally just exploded week ago. We were the first media team to document it. I had no clue that this island had mostly been cliffs before we arrived .. almost zero sandy beaches. We walked along virgin shores while steam rose through the sand & burnt the soles of our shoes. Ash in the air stung as it entered our lungs & eyes while we walking along what was once a completely green and lush island. (Google what it used to look like) What became very evident was that this volcano had destroyed any chance of life to continue to thrive on the island. Hundreds of thousand of displaced sea birds were in the sky & water with many dead on the beach. Vladimir our Russian scientist on board confirmed that the Sea Lion rookery had been wiped out leaving only a few stubborn males behind, his camera traps and observation hut also buried in ash. Dead seaweed from the changed ocean PH lined the rocks where we took samples of ash. It was altogether beautiful & terrifying. This photograph makes it appear as it has always looked this way but just weeks prior this island was vibrant green & it’s coastline was extremely different. For a deeper look check @taylorfreesolo ‘s post.

The first time I visited Lake Tahoe was with four friends, three of whom were from out of the country, on our way to Burning Man. We camped for the night and the next day explored the gorgeous lakeshore on foot. It felt pretty special to see such a beautiful place, that I'd heard so much about, for the first time with them. Sitting on the state line between California and Nevada, it was the perfect midpoint for our adventure, and whetted my appetite for more lake time in the future. City, turned to country, turned to dirt road. We walked through some bushes and twiggy trees, crunch crunching dead leaves and harnesses jingling, to a tree covered hole in the ground.

We had been given a quick lesson in rappelling and ascending in a mix of Indonesian, English, and a lot of miming. Apparently we passed the test and what followed was hands down one of the most beautiful outdoor experiences of my life.

Here I am descending 300 feet through through technicolor beams of light. At one point I could see the rays all above me and a circular rainbow below me and all I could hear was the rushing of water below. If you’re ever in #Yogyakarta I would highly recommend doing this as a day detour!!

Kuril Islands day 4: Sunrise shines on the small ridge where we made camp on the edge of the Onekatan volcano. Nowhere on this island is protected from the wind. In fact the cold volcanic lake that acts as a mote around the volcanic cone creates an inversion and sucks the clouds over the rim. Lenticular clouds formed all day as we watched clouds move like a swift river over the landscape. We pushed through the hike with 50-80lb packs of camera gear & shot our way through the sunset & crescent moon into night. Sleeping didn’t seem like an option when our Russian team said this was the best conditions that they have ever seen here.

Congratulations @regan_bluelove_cowger I’m thrilled to partner with @SpeckTravel {#ad} for their launch today, and to celebrate, I’m hosting a sweepstakes for one person to be entered to win a set of their new line of luggage! You all know I usually only promote brands I already am a customer of before I am approached to do work but in this case when my old friend asked me to consider Speck, I said yes because it was my friend asking and I knew I could trust him. I'm glad I did! I've taken a few trips with my Speck luggage and I love it. They really thought out the details. Three compression bag style accessories are included with each, there's a laundry bag as well as small built-in zip pockets perfect for jewelry and miscellany. In the case of the backpack there's a wet pocket for those odd things you don't want spilling into other areas of your luggage or for that gear that you need an extra layer of protection for and the whole bag is water-resistant. All include TSA-approved locks. My travel tripod fits perfectly in both the case and the backpack (which is important to me because I hate when it's on the outside and can get caught on things in airports or on planes). The pockets and included accessories help me perfectly organize my gear. This is me actually packing my Speck bags for another trip, the only thing missing is the camera I used to take this which went in the bag once I was done. These aren't bags I packed just for this {sponsored} post. Now it's your turn when you win your own set of Speck luggage by:
• Liking this post & following @specktravel
• Leaving a comment telling us where you’d travel with your new luggage
• Bonus entry if you tag a friend
.
Anyone can enter, you just need a US address to receive shipment! Not affiliated with Instagram. No purchase necessary to win. Winner chosen and notified by IG DM July 14.

It hurts to say that this very low resolution preview image is all that’s left from possibly the most epic flight of my life while documenting the remote & harsh Island of Onekatan last night. Upon landing, gale force winds blew it off a huge cliff rendering our 3 hour rescue mission worthless. We called it off at midnight while @renan_ozturk @tedhesser & I hung from shallow tree roots with headlamps over 80ft cliffs leading to the volcanic lake below. Despite being only 30ft away from our precious memory cards from the expedition the risk wasn’t worth it. To add insult to injury the small thumbnail file was still visible on my phone so we can all appreciate this truly remote beauty. I’ve never cried from losing and image but last night I was pretty close. Onward & upward the journey continues... .

@roam You have the memories!

@roam Nothing wrong with a good nature cry.

That first sight of the ocean between dune grasses, the first taste of salty breeze... it has forever been changed for me, by the experience I had on Cape Cod {hosted} with @action4ifaw & @kintravel
.
On the 2nd day of our trip {that you too can book for Aug or Sep}, we spent half the day with Katie, Sarah & Brian at one of the IFaW centers where deployment and then later research happens whenever there are whales, dolphins or seals stranded on the Cape. Which, we learned, is quite often. The particular geography of Cape Cod that makes it such a wonderful summer vacation destination for so many here in the USA and the dramatic tides that have lent the area an air of mystery and mysticism going back to whaling days and beyond - can actually wreak havoc on the safety of pinnipeds and cetaceans that call the nearby ocean... home. That plus an increase in fishing by human beings using methods and materials that can cause dramatic harm, means IFaW works basically 365 days a year helping marine mammals as well as doing research and conducting studies to ensure that now and in the future, we can all co-exist to the benefit of all & the detriment of none.
.
I was naive enough to think before we had this experience that the job might not be *that* hard or the problem *that* bad. But then I saw the photos of seals and whales trapped in fishing line and rope. Photos that made me weep. And I tried to help lift a training dolphin the way rescuers might have to on a beach. Even as part of a team it was not easy. And it was just one task of thousands that they do.
.
Danté & I have made huge changes in our life to ensure we’re being more responsible citizens of this . We have a lot more that we still want to do. But we can’t do it all. I’m so grateful to have learned about what IFaW is doing for #peopleandplanet Things I may never be able to do for mammals that I still care a lot about. As for you? Donate to help their work, book this same trip with Kin to learn for yourself, or volunteer with IFaW if you have relevant experience! #kintravel #pushforprogress // photos by @valoriedarling

@action4ifaw Thank you for sharing these beautiful words and for joining in our mission to help animals, people and the place we call home. ♥️

@swopes 💙💙💙💙 miss you, friend!

This morning felt surreal. Sunrise light, 1200 years of history, and hundreds of temples in just a few kilometers. From the sky these 249 buildings were laid out facing the cardinal directions in the exact shape of a mandala. Suffice to say we cancelled all our other morning plans and stayed for hours enjoying the quiet.

@roam Incredible lighting

@sashadigiulian Epic!

“Bun dé!” That’s “good day” in Ladin. Did you know there are three languages spoken in the Dolomites?
—
The region was once part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until after WW1. So there’s plenty of German spoken.
—
Then of course Italian, because it’s now part of Italy.
—
But what about Ladin? Ladin is an ancient Romance language spoken by about 30,000 people here. It came first, before German & Italian.

$500 GIVEAWAY! {Closed} Congrats to @watts.dani and her husband @jjackson781 .
When @backcountry reached out to me to help promote all of the incredible gear they have on their website, they offered me a $500 gift card to order anything I wanted. I honestly don’t need more gear and have been trying to practice a more sustainable lifestyle, so I asked if I could give my $500 to YOU—the people who follow and support what I do. So here we go :)
I’ve broken it up into two $250 gift cards so you and a friend can both get some gear you need for this summer’s outdoor adventures.
Just tag a friend in the comments and if you want, list a place you’re excited to go or some gear you might need. I’ll randomly select the 2 winners (1 comment) by July 11th.
Even if you don’t win, you can use the discount code TRAVIS15 for 15% off of your first purchase on Backcountry’s website! (Some exclusions apply for discounts and shipping for the giveaway.)
I just got back from a solo backpacking trip in Yosemite. Here are a few photos and videos of the gear I’ve been using and companies I’ve been supporting for years, almost all of which are on Backcountry’s site. Let me know if you have any questions about my gear and if you’re interested in this being a monthly giveaway? Thank you for your support!
