Over at @thetravelbootcamp HQ we’re excited to announce @stayzAU as a partner for our Queenstown event in a few weeks! Hell yes!
.
I’m such an accommodation fiend, considering I spend a great deal of time on the road, I am borderline obsessed with picking the most comfortable and charming place to stay no matter where I go. Honestly, I’m borderline neurotic about it. My dream home rental has a view, a Nespresso machine, fast wifi, and a bathtub. What about you?
.
Stayz are Australia’s original home booking site with access to 190 locations worldwide, including Queenstown (wink wink) You might know them as ‘Bookabach’ in New Zealand, or ‘Vrbo’ in America, all of which I frequently use on my travels around the world, as well as many of our delegates, who are using Stayz to share houses in during the weekend. With over 700 listings in Queenstown (lots with baths!), be sure to check out Stayz for a last-minute place to stay with character!
.
And if that’s not enough, join us in Queenstown and you’ll get to meet Stayz and even have the chance to win an opportunity to work with them while being mentored by @laurenepbath! Yes, we are HANDING you a foot in the door and the chance to work with a worldwide, prestigious brand! Where were these possibilities when I was starting out in travel blogging? #Stayz #HolidayRental #TheTravelBootcamp #queenstown

[ Personal Announcement ] So I did a pretty deep post yesterday, about how difficult a time I’m having at the moment. I want to thank everyone who took the time to write some words or DM me, Instagram has always been such an incredible platform for me. A place where I feel connected, such an undervalued thing these days - connection. So I wanted to share something very personal with you here, before I’m even sharing on Facebook... I’m pregnant! And I want to share that announcement with the sentiment that I am so sorry for the many women (and families) that I know who are struggling with pregnancy. I didn’t want to do a grand, flashy announcement that will add to your pain and I hope this is okay? I’m 18 weeks - starting to show already. Dreamboat and I fell pregnant in Zimbabwe this year, which feels so right to me. We found out in Canada, a few days before this photo was taken. I truly believe that the work I’ve been doing on myself this year and my healing and acceptance of myself and my past has made me ready for motherhood. A strange thing as I never thought I would be a mother. Let’s just say, it was time and we are so thrilled and so excited for this next chapter in our lives. And for those that are wondering, the first trimester was BRUTAL! All the emotions, all the overwhelm, all the nausea and what felt like PMS on speed! To every woman that’s ever been pregnant I salute you! ️

@twheat Congrats guys ⚡️

@samhorine Congrats! Baby Bath is so exciting 😍

This quote has been on my mind a lot the past few days as I've watched my friend @carolinecalloway get dragged through a media shitstorm. Again.
.
I've been friends with Caroline for years, and no matter what people say about her, I know she's about the most authentic person I've ever met. A total anomaly and beautifully complicated, hyper-self-aware yet starry-eyed and hopeful, she embraces her messiness in a way that few ever can hope to do. And she's bold enough to share it with the world. She's publicly vulnerable and often is judged harshly for it.
.
Her words and her work have a profound impact on showing the world that you're not alone - one of my greatest motivators too. Who the fuck else does that on Instagram? Because from where I'm sitting, all I see are millions of carefully crafted facades (of which I'm guilty too) of what people wish they were like, instead of what they *actually* are, let alone wildly embracing their creativity and putting their work out there.
.
It's easy to pretend to be someone else, but it takes real guts to be yourself, to make things, let alone share it with the world. So here's my daily reminder to myself and to you guys, we chose who we follow on social media and what we consume. And judging other people online (who you've never met) is just a reflection of your own insecurities and issues.
.
“Recognizing that people's reactions don't belong to you is the only sane way to create. If people enjoy what you've created, terrific. If people ignore what you've created, too bad. If people misunderstand what you've created, don't sweat it. And what if people absolutely hate what you've created? What if people attack you with savage vitriol, and insult your intelligence, and malign your motives, and drag your good name through the mud? Just smile sweetly and suggest - as politely as you possibly can - that they go make their own fucking art. Then stubbornly continue making yours. Elizabeth Gilbert ️ #kiakaha #indefenseofcaroline

The rim of Raikoke volcano just a week after its eruption. A once green and lush environment turned completely uninhabitable in a matter of moments.. possibly seconds. On one hand new land formations were created, extending the shoreline by hundreds of feet.. essentially the island itself was growing. On the other hand.. an unimaginable death toll to all animal species living on or near the island. Ultimately a not so microcosm of the circle of life. It will be interesting to watch this island and see the changes it makes in the years to come & how quickly life returns.

Are you okay? I’ve been reflecting on this question a fair bit this week, obviously because of #RUOKDay but also because this is probably the first year that I’m not really okay. Well, that’s misleading. It’s probably the first year that I’ve been comfortable admitting that I’m not okay. It’s been a funny old year for me, a year to acknowledge and grieve my past for the first time in my life. I’m also coping with a lot in my personal life - a person very close to me is battling drug addiction and serious mental health issues, another person from my past is back in my life and terminally ill. Those people are my brother and my father. In fact, I’m scared that I’ll lose both of them this year. I’ve lost a best friend this year (through her choice), someone that I thought would be in my life forever, and another very important friend is battling health complications. And work, don’t even get me started! It gets harder and scarier every year. Before, the old Lauren, would have said “shit happens and I’m strong” , and I am ... strong. But it’s not okay. It’s hard. And it’s even harder to admit that I’m not bulletproof. I’m vulnerable and I’m sad and my pain is real. I’m the last person that you would think to ask “Are you okay”, but I’m someone that probably needed it. Luckily for me I have an excellent support network around me and I’ve been able to sit into my pain and get uncomfortable and cry it out. As someone who’s struggled with pain - acknowledging my own and sympathizing with others’ - for most of my life, it’s been eye-opening. So I just wanted to say, if you’re in pain I’m so sorry. There is strength and power in vulnerability, not weakness. Don’t be afraid to reach out and be consoled and loved. Because we all deserve love and happiness. ️

Me in my element. I can (and do) sit and watch wildlife for hours, especially penguins. True story - you can’t watch penguins walk around and not smile
.
This was on the best day of my voyage down to the Subantarctic with @heritageexpeditions last summer on Macquarie Island. It was a warm, still and sunny afternoon, a rarity in this part of the world; a place defined by wind and rain, to see it in all its splendor in the warm sunshine was infectious. None of us wanted to leave
.
No matter where I am on my travels, I always make sure to take some time for myself to sit and just observe in peace and silence. Soaking in all of these memories firsthand and not from behind a camera is important to me as a writer and traveler. After all, what is more important than making memories? @talman #penguinparty #birdnerd

The Rise of Superman (about flow state, incredibly interesting)

Podcasts:
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show (so so relevant especially if you are a creative or entrepreneur)

Broken Brain Podcast (episode 55: How to Retrain Your Subconscious Mind - kind of a long one but so good. Listen in parts)

The Ezra Klein Show (Cal Newport: Digital Minimalism and Deep Work episodes) Cal Newport is a great speaker on any podcast. I think I’ve heard him 4 or 5 times.

WWI was a horrible war for the people of the Dolomites. Not only were the Italians and Austrians fight each other, but they were also fighting against mother nature. This was a war that was largely fought on top of mountains during harsh winter conditions. In this spot, in particular, the Austrians figured out that going down into the crevasses on the Marmolada Glacier was *actually* safer than being above the ground. They built an entire village under the glacier carving out tunnels and designating rooms for a saloon and housing quarters. They kept it such a secret that no one even knew about it until years after the war was over. As the glacier melts, artifacts from Ice City are starting to appear. @marmoladamovetothetop @visitmarmolada @heartofthedolomites

The larger area around Portland, Maine that we visited for this assignment with @glpfilms includes @visitfreeport. It was here we spent our last hours in Maine before flying home; walking the trails through Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park where we emerged from the trees to this beautiful rocky coast, riding the tractor around @wolfesneckcenter to learn about their innovative practices in regenerative agriculture, shopping at L.L. Bean where it all started and having lunch at the historic Harraseeket Inn all before grabbing a last pint of Maine craft beer at Stars and Stripes.
.
Like every day of this experience, it was the people who made it special. I’ve tagged their businesses and organizations in my photo.
.
I arrived to Maine knowing I’d probably enjoy it based on my prior visits to the state. But we visited only areas that were new to me and I found I went from liking Maine to genuinely loving it in the space of our 10 day journey. Like I said when I started this series, I realize it’s a weird time to talk about why you should visit any part of the USA. I see headlines about people being afraid to come here and it breaks my heart. Because we’re so much more than just those headlines. There are so many more stories to discover here. Maine really reinforced that for me. And spots like this reminded me that I don’t have to travel to a foreign country to see beautiful vistas in nature. There’s that and so much more right here. #UnscriptedMaine

I have a secret to share ... most people in life don’t really know what the f they’re doing. People that seem like they have all the answers, all the success. People that you aspire to be... they’re all just doing the same as everyone else. (Throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks .) I’ve been speculating on this a lot lately as more and more people congratulate me on my career success, and the girls and I with the Bootcamp. Because guess what? Even we’re pinching ourselves that Nat Geo, Vogue Australia, a New York Times Award Winning Photojournalist and some of our favorite brands have signed up. The truth is, successful people have a high tolerance to fear and rejection. The only true secrets to my success are as follows: 1) I know what I want out of my life (purpose) 2) I have grit and consistent habits with my workload 3) I’m constantly uncomfortable (fear) and have learned to live with it 4) I have professional standards and treat all people as equal and 5) I’m not afraid of rejection. When you come to the Bootcamp we teach you all the stuff you need to know to work in travel. But for many the real value comes from learning all the other stuff. Mindset, etiquette, dealing with rejection and understanding that anyone can have this type of life if they’re prepared to put in the work and not be a dick. I can’t believe we’re only a few weeks away! @TheTravelBootcamp #TheTravelBootcamp

I posted this video about a month ago, and took it down after a follower brought to my attention that droning in Austria is potentially illegal. I’d previously researched online and come to the conclusion that if I flew under 30 meters and away from civilization I’d be fine. Turns out some website (spoiler: don’t trust a random website) says that you always need to go thru a massive permitting process to fly a drone in Austria if you plan to take pics or video. To be safe, I took it down. Later emailed the official Austro Control (who control the airspace in Austria) and they responded with: “As long as you operate your Drone under 79 joule kinetic energy you don't need a permission”. So I researched the formula, and using a Mavic Pro at 1.62 lb at a velocity of 20km/hr generates 11.34 joule kinetic energy. Which is less than 79, so here’s the video again. I deal with stuff like this, just spare you guys the details usually. Not a very cool story to go with this ridiculously cool day that me and @jess.wandering had in the Austrian Alps.

A year ago if you had asked me how I was doing, I would have smiled and said I'm happy, busy, traveling a lot, in a flippant reply brushing off a common question. I had just turned 30, and I had everything going for me; I was in control of my life. I thought I was happy. I was busy. I was good. I was traveling a lot.
.
But underneath the facade of having my shit together, it turns out, I didn't. Like many people, I kept myself busy because that's what I was supposed to be doing, right? Beneath the surface of the busy girl who made a living by traveling was a girl who was deeply anxious and unhappy, a girl who was refusing to face her oldest, most painful stories. But life has a way of stripping you bare and forcing those dark shadows in your soul into the light.
.
10 months ago that careful, purposefully curated facade was shattered when I found 150 beaching whales alone while tramping on Stewart Island and had to watch them die in agony in my arms, unable to do anything. That was a profound experience that changed me forever. My issues with control suddenly slapped me hard in the face, by presenting me with a situation I couldn't control at all.
.
I began to slip. I pretended I was fine. I wasn't fine. I was desperately clinging to my constructed life, like trying to hold water in my cupped hands while going 100kph in the fast lane. It was useless. So many memories, stories, and emotions began spilling out of me, flooding my brain, but I didn't want to face them. The human ability to ignore pain is astonishing.
.
As I hurled closer and closer towards rock bottom all the while grasping at anything to hold on to, I had a profound realization. Let it go, Liz. Just. Let. It. Go. It was only when I was willing to let go of the control of my illusion of what I thought I should be, what I was supposed to be, was I finally able to face myself and begin to do the work and heal. I wasn't ok. I needed help.
.
It’s easy to say you’re fine, but it’s a lot harder to ask for help.

Guys I’m so stoked to share that @gooverseas is giving away a scholarship to study abroad in New Zealand that includes free flights and full tuition! I talked a lot about this opportunity last year but I wanted to share again because this is such a killer opportunity. Not only did studying abroad when I was 19 completely change my life, but living in New Zealand is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
.
Studying abroad has a profound effect on how you see your own country - and it’s one of the most fun and enlightening experiences I’ve ever had. It gives you a new perspective, a new lens in which to view your upbringing and culture. For your entire life, it’s likely your worldview has never been challenged or questioned but when you study abroad, you’re forced to consider other world views. It’s the definition of eye-opening.

Portland, Maine was founded as, and still is, a port city. You can see its connections to seafaring in most of the obvious ways you will see in any city on the water but sometimes the evidence of history is a little harder to spot. In this area of the Old Port in particular, you have to look high up at the building on the far right to see the doors that were once used for offloading cargo from ships. There was a door for low tide and a door for high tide and where I stood to take this, the water would have been over my head at almost any time of day before the land was eventually filled in and a more modern port added. It’s that connection to the ocean that really sets this Portland apart from the one I know a bit better on the West Coast. (Which is weird since I was born and raised on the East Coast. Then again lots of my life is weird.) Anyway, that’s where the most obvious differences may end for some and after that, there are actually more similarities than differences. I think! Chief amongst them that “Portland, Oregon's founders were two settlers from New England: Asa Lovejoy of Massachusetts and Francis Pettygrove of Maine. Both men wanted to name the new port city after their respective home cities—Lovejoy for Boston and Pettygrove for Portland, Maine. The men flipped a coin to decide [in 1835], and the rest is history.” — words in quotes from @smartertravel since I thought their succinct version of the story was the best one I found online. But I heard it first from Bob at @visitportland.
.
Both cities also have a heart for the environment, a link to nearby outdoor adventures, a healthy art scene, universities, lots and lots of breweries and so much to keep your mouth and stomach super happy on the food front. The latter two which we discovered thanks to tours with @mainebrewbus and Bryce of @mainefoodforthought. I’m hungry just recalling all that we learned. One of the cleverest improvements to our next Bootcamp is making our sponsors a bigger part of the conversation, after all they are all brands that we expect our delegates to be pitching to, and working with. We are particularly excited to be launching an initiative with Stayz, who have just expanded into the international market from Australia. (Although they’ve been around forever as Vrbo in the US & Bookabach in NZ) Stayz are a prime client for a travel creative because of the sheer number of destinations and locations they operate in. It’s secretly been my dream to work with one client that just sends me all over the world. Plus, Stayz are already actively working with influencers and creatives! So, how would you get a ‘look in with a brand like Stayz? (Apart from coming to the next Bootcamp to meet them and enter their comp .) 1) Know, love and use the brand. Clients love to work with people who already know what they’re about. Wouldn’t you? 2) Know the kind of content the brand favors and offer them more of that! Brands love to have more of what they already have! You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. 3) Pitch articulately by introducing yourself, outlining what you want and detailing what you can offer. Make it personal and engaging. This is where knowing, loving and using the brand helps. 4) Be familiar with brand messaging. For example, knowing that Stayz are Australia’s original home booking site and they’ve recently launched holiday homes and apartments in 190 locations around the world will definitely impress when you make your case. ️ @StayzAu #Stayz #HolidayRental #TheTravelBootcamp #NewZealand #NZMustDo

People love to hate me 🤷‍️ If you’re going to have a blog and social media profile, and you put your opinion and your thoughts into the world, you have to understand that not everyone is going to like what you have to say. The trick is handling it @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp
